A valid driver’s license is required by law to drive a car or other motor vehicle. If you have a valid driver’s license from your home country it will be valid in Canada for the first 90 days after you land in the country. If your driver’s license is from a country other than the United States, you must also have an international driver’s license.
If you plan to drive while you are here and do not have an international driver’s license, you must apply for an Ontario Driver’s Licence Anyone 16 years and older can apply for a driver’s license in Ontario.
If you have 1-2 years of driving experience in your own country within the past three years, some mandatory waiting times can be waived when you apply. To qualify, you’ll need to present a valid foreign driver’s license and a written statement of your driving experience from your government. This letter must be from the licensing department in your home country, or from your embassy, high commission, or consulate in Canada. It must be on official letterhead, less than six months old, and written in either English or French.
Remember that any car you drive:
- Must be registered with the Ontario government
- Must be covered by an insurance policy
- Must be driven by someone with a valid driver’s license
